“The Post-Apocalyptic Travel Guide” follows a speculative government organization (USDOPSAC – United States Department of Public Safety and Control) tasked with documenting the conditions of the planet’s surface while also distributing safe, virtual travel experiences for survivors living in bunkers. The virtual travel experiences include brochures, videos, a website, and photo ops with your favorite ruin. The creative project melds truth and fiction by presenting current “truthful” documentary images of abandoned ruins in the American landscape that are contextualized into the performance of a speculative, “fictional” post-apocalyptic narrative. The inefficiency of the actual American government is critiqued by this project’s speculative agency that ironically uses resources to placate the public with frivolous travel experiences instead of proposing actionable solutions to why the planet’s surface is uninhabitable. The distinctions between truth and fiction become tenuous in the project revealing underlying apocalyptic dread in the American consciousness.

Tara Lyon is a multimedia artist living in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex in Texas. She is an artist, photographer, filmmaker, and writer with a focus on American culture critique. Her primary thematic and scholarly concerns are post-apocalyptic aesthetics in landscape and documentary photography, intersectionality and representation in movies and television, the Anthropocene, and the “American Dream.”

Attend this workshop in person to get started or to pick up where you left off in fall 2025. Bio: Patrick Mercier is a Professor and Vice Chair of Electrical and Computer Engineering and co-founder/co-director of the Center for Wearable Sensors and the Power Management Integration Center at UC San Diego. He received his B.Sc. degree from the University of Alberta, Canada, the S.M. and Ph.D. degrees from MIT, and is an IEEE Fellow. Prof. Mercier has received numerous awards, including the San Diego Engineering Council Outstanding Engineer Award, an NSF CAREER Award, a Biocom Catalyst Award, a UCSD Academic Senate Distinguished Teaching Award, a DARPA Young Faculty Award, a Beckman Young Investigator Award, the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) Jack Kilby Award, amongst others. He has published over 230 peer-reviewed papers in venues such as Science, Nature Biotechnology, Nature Biomedical Engineering, Nature Electronics, Nature Communications, ISSCC (32 papers), and others. He currently serves as the Power Management Subcommittee Vice Chair at ISSCC, and has served as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Letter, and on the Technical Program Committees of ISSCC, VLSI, and CICC. He has co-edited three books: High-Density Integrated Electrocortical Neural Interfaces (Elsevier Academic Press, 2019), Power Management Integrated Circuits (CRC Press, 2016), and Ultra-Low-Power Short-Range Radios (Springer, 2015). His research interests include the design of energy-efficient mixed-signal systems, RF circuits, power converters, and sensor interfaces for wearable, medical, mobile, and IoT applications.

“The Post-Apocalyptic Travel Guide” follows a speculative government organization (USDOPSAC – United States Department of Public Safety and Control) tasked with documenting the conditions of the planet’s surface while also distributing safe, virtual travel experiences for survivors living in bunkers. The virtual travel experiences include brochures, videos, a website, and photo ops with your favorite ruin. The creative project melds truth and fiction by presenting current “truthful” documentary images of abandoned ruins in the American landscape that are contextualized into the performance of a speculative, “fictional” post-apocalyptic narrative. The inefficiency of the actual American government is critiqued by this project’s speculative agency that ironically uses resources to placate the public with frivolous travel experiences instead of proposing actionable solutions to why the planet’s surface is uninhabitable. Moving beyond the hand, some artists used unexpected parts of their bodies to make their marks: Shiraga painted with his feet and Matsutani used his mouth to create vinyl bubbles. By extension, their bodily performances became part of their art. The objects and paintings themselves are testaments to the ephemeral nature of their energetic performance.

Other artists of this period upended the implement of the brush by pouring directly onto the canvas or experimented further with materiality by using different mediums, such as tin. Proponents of three art movements—Mono-ha, Dansaekhwa, and Gutai—rigorously interrogated and explored artistic performances, playful use of materials, experimentations with new techniques, a commitment to direct gestures, and a reorientation of subject and object. Through it all, the very process and stages of presenting objects became as important as the final art form.

A common visual thread amongst these artists is a commitment to abstraction and minimalism. These art forms of painting, sound, and installation are meant to be participatory, expanding how the viewer interacts with works of art. Challenging traditional ideas of art, each object is a transformative site that discourages passive looking. In the case of Takamatsu’s Cube 6 + 3, which greets visitors at the entrance of the exhibition, the artist’s simple application of lines onto a three-dimensional cube alters our perception of space and depth.

Two contemporary artists, Tatsuo Miyajima and Do Ho Suh, are positioned as means to provoke a dialogue and conversation about the antecedents and legacy of performance art for contemporary artists and its twin accompaniment the viewer/participant.

“The Post-Apocalyptic Travel Guide” follows a speculative government organization (USDOPSAC – United States Department of Public Safety and Control) tasked with documenting the conditions of the planet’s surface while also distributing safe, virtual travel experiences for survivors living in bunkers. The virtual travel experiences include brochures, videos, a website, and photo ops with your favorite ruin. The creative project melds truth and fiction by presenting current “truthful” documentary images of abandoned ruins in the American landscape that are contextualized into the performance of a speculative, “fictional” post-apocalyptic narrative. The inefficiency of the actual American government is critiqued by this project’s speculative agency that ironically uses resources to placate the public with frivolous travel experiences instead of proposing actionable solutions to why the planet’s surface is uninhabitable. The distinctions between truth and fiction become tenuous in the project revealing underlying apocalyptic dread in the American consciousness.

The exhibition will include photographic prints, one or more looped videos, interactive printed documents such as travel brochures and magazines, and an expansion of Lyon’s travel agency brochure installation from the “Grounded” exhibition at SP/N gallery.

Artist Biography

Tara Lyon is a multimedia artist living in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex in Texas. She is an artist, photographer, filmmaker, and writer with a focus on American culture critique. Her primary thematic and scholarly concerns are post-apocalyptic aesthetics in landscape and documentary photography, intersectionality and representation in movies and television, the Anthropocene, and the “American Dream.”

Throughlines, features student work from Dr. Diane Durant’s ARTS 4308: Image/Text—Artist’s Books course. Dr. Durant, Professor of Instruction at BASS and Director of the Comer Collection of Photography, challenged students to create artist books or zines inspired solely by the title of a photograph from the collection, without ever seeing the image itself.

The resulting works explore connections between language, imagination, and visual interpretation, and are displayed alongside their photographic counterparts.

This three-week camp for children ages 5 to 15 not only builds Chinese language skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing, but also develops specific talents in: Kung Fu, Calligraphy, Ink and Water Painting, Tai Chi Fan, folk dances, Chinese crafts and Jumping Ropes.

Daily immersion language classes that include reading Chinese classics such as Three Character Classic and Tang Poems, telling stories, singing songs and tongue twisters enable campers to master the language quickly. Daily immersion language classes that include reading Chinese classics such as Three Character Classic and Tang Poems, telling stories, singing songs and tongue twisters enable campers to master the language quickly. Groundbreakers brings together artists who played with materiality, space, and performance in postwar Japan and Korea after the 1950s. Moving beyond the hand, some artists used unexpected parts of their bodies to make their marks: Shiraga painted with his feet and Matsutani used his mouth to create vinyl bubbles. By extension, their bodily performances became part of their art. The objects and paintings themselves are testaments to the ephemeral nature of their energetic performance.

Other artists of this period upended the implement of the brush by pouring directly onto the canvas or experimented further with materiality by using different mediums, such as tin. Proponents of three art movements—Mono-ha, Dansaekhwa, and Gutai—rigorously interrogated and explored artistic performances, playful use of materials, experimentations with new techniques, a commitment to direct gestures, and a reorientation of subject and object. Through it all, the very process and stages of presenting objects became as important as the final art form.

A common visual thread amongst these artists is a commitment to abstraction and minimalism. These art forms of painting, sound, and installation are meant to be participatory, expanding how the viewer interacts with works of art. Challenging traditional ideas of art, each object is a transformative site that discourages passive looking. In the case of Takamatsu’s Cube 6 + 3, which greets visitors at the entrance of the exhibition, the artist’s simple application of lines onto a three-dimensional cube alters our perception of space and depth.

The GRI Certified Sustainability Professional Course equips senior leaders with the strategic insight needed to oversee, govern and confidently sign off on sustainability disclosures in an increasingly complex regulatory and stakeholder landscape.
