Join the Office of Student Volunteerism and the Multicultural Center to celebrate Juneteenth at the 2023 Bruce August Jr. Juneteenth Day of Service!
This service project is named in memory of Bruce August Jr., a UTD Alum and Director of the Multicultural Center who sadly passed away in 2023. Bruce had personal family ties to the original Juneteenth and was a catalyst for ensuring UTD recognized Juneteenth annually. We honor his spirit by bringing people together to celebrate Juneteenth through three of Bruce's favorite things: Service, Community, and Food.
For this project, Comets will travel Feed My Starving Children's site in Richardson where they will pack meals to be distributed to global communities facing food insecurity.
Transportation to and from the facility will be provided. Transportation times are included in the event. Participants will meet in SSA 12.471 before leaving for the project.
Light breakfast refreshments will be provided to volunteers before departing for the project (while supplies last).
PLEASE NOTE: CLOSED TOED SHOES ARE REQUIRED FOR THIS PROJECT AND JEWELRY IS NOT RECOMMENDED EITHER
Register now and join your fellow Comets in celebrating Juneteenth and combating food insecurity in our local communities!
What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, TX with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free.
Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation – which had become official on January 1, 1863.
