NOTE: This project is now happening on-campus. Originally it was supposed to be an off-campus project with Feed My Starving Children-Richardson. Due to damage to their facility during the recent storms, Feed My Starving Children has had to pause operations temporarily. We are looking to do another project with them later this summer. See below for the updated details.
Join the Office of Student Volunteerism to celebrate Juneteenth at the 2024 Bruce August Jr. Juneteenth Day of Service!
This service project is named in memory of Bruce August Jr., an alum and staff member from UTD who sadly passed away in 2023. Bruce had personal family ties to the original Juneteenth and was a catalyst for ensuring UTD recognized Juneteenth annually. We honor his spirit by bringing people together to celebrate Juneteenth through three of Bruce's favorite things: Service, Community, and Food.
For this project, Comets will be packing and decorating snack bags for Vogel (formerly Vogel Alcove) to pass out to children who are experiencing homelessness. Vogel is an organization based in the Cedars neighborhood of Dallas whose mission is to help young children and their families overcome the lasting and traumatic effects of homelessness.
Lunch will be provided to participants while supplies last.
Register now and join your fellow Comets in celebrating Juneteenth and combating food insecurity in our local communities!
What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, TX with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation – which had become official on January 1, 1863.
