The Harry W. Bass Jr. School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology at UT Dallas, organized in partnership with the MENARAH Initiative (Middle Eastern, North African, and Related Arts and Humanities), invites the campus and DFW Metroplex community to a talk with historian and filmmaker Sam Dalrymple. Drawing on years of travel and fieldwork across India, Dalrymple shares how stories emerge beyond the classroom and archive—through cities, monuments, and everyday landscapes shaped by history. Blending storytelling with on-the-ground research, the talk explores how documenting the past helps us better understand place, memory, and change in the present.
Sam Dalrymple is a Delhi-raised Scottish historian and award-winning filmmaker, trained at Oxford University in Persian and Sanskrit, with research experience across South and Central Asia. He is the co-founder of Project Dastaan, an international peace-building initiative reconnecting families displaced by the 1947 Partition of India. His debut book, Shattered Lands: Five Partitions and the Making of Modern Asia, was an international bestseller and named a Best Book of 2025 by multiple leading publications.
