Thursday, October 10, 2024 6pm to 8pm
Join us for a talk with Dartmouth Professor of German and Comparative Literature Dr. Irene Kacandes, whose influential work in the public humanities bridges disciplines and advocates the importance of the humanities to all fields. In this era of suspicion and name-calling, there is much talk circulating that an education in a humanities field is a waste of money precisely because the graduate won't be able to get a job and earn a living. This logic is based on incorrect facts.
Kacandes's talk offers a different narrative about humanities field graduates and the humanities in the public sphere. Kacandes shares her experiences with a conversation series she curated called "Humanities for Humans," and cites other examples of efforts to bring more understanding to the general public about what the humanities offer to address the world's most pressing problems.
This talk will be followed by a Q&A and reception.
