Synopsis:
The Dream Play is a phantasmagoric hallucinatory fairy-tale fantasy that follows the associative logic of a dream. The 1901 play was a precursor to Expressionism and Surrealism, influencing the transformation of drama, narrative, and the possibility of artistic expression that followed. The play follows the daughter of the Vedic god Indra who descends from heaven to earth to find everything that can happen and is possible. The imagination spins, weaving new patterns, a mixture of memories, experiences, free fancies, incongruities, and improvisations. The characters split, double, multiply, evaporate, condense, disperse, and reassemble. Time and place are provisional, along with identity, self, and meaning. The daughter of Indra discovers no secrets and that life is an illusion, like a dream.
