The 9th seminar of the Department Seminar Series - Spring 2022 will be presented in-person on Friday at 3:30 PM by Dr. Gallardo-Williams, from North Carolina State University (Host: Dr. Gassensmith).

Title: “The Future is Here: Virtual Reality Organic Chemistry Labs”

Abstract: Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic online chemistry laboratories were generally considered inferior to in-person labs. This general perception limited the amount of funding opportunities devoted to the subject to a handful of programs all over the world. At North Carolina State University we had developed a set of pre-pandemic Virtual Reality labs that were shared in an open education model and that were used all over the world as an alternative during forced university closures. We will discuss the development, testing, and deployment of these labs during the last two years, and we will present evidence to support the idea that development of online labs should be sustained, not curtailed, even if we are able to return to in-person instruction conditions.
