Free EventA digital studies workshop hosted by Dean Nils Roemer and Dr. Katie Fisher focused on the historical persecution of queer men in Nazi Germany under Paragraph 175—the law prohibiting homosexual activity in the German Reich. In considering three visualizations which memorializing the men who were swept up in the violence of the Third Reich we will: interpret the data presented, generate new insights, and deepen our understanding of the state persecution of queer men in Nazi Germany from 1933 to 1945. Upon liberating the camps, Allied forces found thousands of note cards used to catalog and track prisoners within the camp systems. The data recorded on the notecards was typed out by Allied troops into registration summary books. The scale of these records prohibited the kind of thorough analysis which is now possible through the digital humanities. Join us for a short talk followed by a collective discussion about the insights and reflections generated by the data visualizations presented in the gallery.
