Please join us for a talk with author Monica Steinberg as she discusses her new book, Lives of the Imaginary Artists in Cold War California.
Monica Steinberg is an Assistant Professor at the University of Hong Kong. Her research considers the intersection of art, fictional attribution, humor, and law. Recent publications include articles in American Art, Art History, Art Journal, Grey Room, and Crime, Media, Culture, as well as her forthcoming book, Lives of the Imaginary Artists in Cold War California (University of Chicago Press, 2025).
About the book:
If an artist is imaginary, whose self-expression is on display—and how can an imaginary artist paint a portrait or self-portrait? Lives of the Imaginary Artists explores how a group of real California artists created fictional counterparts. Laced with humor, their experiments with pseudonymity engaged with the political climate of the Cold War era and frustrated the conventions linking named artist to artwork.
