The presenter will be Mary McNaughton-Cassill, PhD., The University of Texas at San Antonio

Most college faculty members love their discipline and are committed to advancing the knowledge base in their field and sharing what they know with others. However, in the wake of the pandemic, many faculty members have also found themselves dealing within increasingly stressed students, who are turning to them for advice, guidance, and support. This added burden can result in the experience of burnout, or feelings of hopelessness and futility in the face of the overwhelming demands, and/or compassion fatigue, a form of emotional distress brought on by dealing with other peoples’ trauma. Fortunately, there are cognitive and behavioral strategies we can use to regain our balance. Not the least of these is acknowledging that we can’t care for others if we fail to care for ourselves. Participants will learn to recognize signs of burnout and compassion fatigue in themselves and others. They will become aware of strategies for managing these conditions at the personal and professional level.

The UT System Academy of Distinguished Teachers (UTSADT), in collaboration with

UT System Faculty Developers, is sponsoring this monthly series of presentations and

conversations about the relationships between teaching, learning and well-being.
