Join us as Dr. Nils Roemer presents the final lecture of our annual Spring Professor Lecture Series.

The voids and empty spaces in the Jewish Museum in Berlin evoke destruction and absence. The "Memory Void", one of the symbolic spaces on the grounds of Libeskind’s building recalls not only the Holocaust, but also the lives and histories that never became as a result of it. My talk aims to explore absences and voids as important aspects of remembrance. An awareness is apparent in communal and family remembrances but often obscured in public commemorations in museums and on Holocaust remembrance days. I will develop the theme of absence and advance models of remembrance that view the Holocaust as not only a historical event of the past but amidst the enormous void of the future that was annihilated.
