The School of Interdisciplinary Studies presents the Spring 2025 installment of the Gender Lecture Series, "Drinking, Mating, and the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: The Confusion of Modern Womanhood" presented by our guest speaker, the author and journalist Sarah Hepola.

Women have more choices than at any other time in human history, part of why it’s so confusing to figure out who to be. Writer Sarah Hepola discusses three of her major projects from the past decade — the bestselling memoir Blackout, her podcast about the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, America’s Girls, and the memoir she’s currently writing, Unattached — to explore conflicts that have come to define modern female experience. Topics will include binge drinking, dating and marriage, and beauty and weight obsession.

More About Our Speaker: Sarah Hepola is the author of the bestselling memoir, Blackout. Her work has appeared in the New York Times, The Guardian, the Atlantic, Texas Monthly, and Salon, among others. She is a staff writer at the Dallas Morning News and co-conspirator of the culture podcast “Smoke ‘Em if You Got ‘Em.” Hepola is the host and creator of the Texas Monthly podcast America’s Girls, an eight-part series on the lost history and cultural impact of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders.
