Join featured artist Gajin Fujita for an immersive workshop inspired by his work on view in the exhibition, Paper Knife: Objects of Beauty in Early Modern Japan, where contemporary street aesthetics meet the visual traditions of Japan’s warrior past. The program begins with an in-gallery talk led by Fujita, who will discuss his process, materials, and the layered influences—ranging from ukiyo-e prints and gold-leaf screens to Los Angeles graffiti culture—that shape his bold reinterpretations of samurai imagery.
Participants will then walk to Klyde Warren Park for a hands-on graffiti workshop, where Fujita will guide the group through the fundamentals of stencil-making. Attendees will learn to design and cut their own names into reusable stencils and then use spray paint to explore techniques that echo the artist’s own practice. This dynamic program offers a rare opportunity to hear directly from the artist and experiment with the ideas and methods that define his work.
Please note this program involves work with an exacto knife and caution should be taken.
Advance registration required. Ticket price will not show until items are added to your cart.
