Title: Journey From Academia Into Industry

Vanessa Shirazi, PhD
UT Dallas
Dr. Vanessa Shirazi teaches courses in Neuroscience to undergraduate and graduate students in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences. Dr. Shirazi earned her Bachelor of Science from the University of Iowa, where she majored in Psychology. After graduation, she worked in academic research labs, then later for Comprehensive Neuroscience, a clinical research center. Inspired to learn more about the brain, she pursued a PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Her dissertation work focused on the impact of drug abuse on cognition in women with HIV. Afterward, Dr. Shirazi did her postdoctoral research training at Tulane University in New Orleans, where she studied neuroendocrine responses to stress. After postdoc, she worked for 6 years for BioTek Instruments as a technical sales field representative – working with a broad range of academic labs, biotech startups, and pharmaceutical companies. Dr. Shirazi brings to the classroom her broad background in neuroscience research as well as industry knowledge and experience.
