Linda K. Anderson’s PhD Exhibition combines the historical phrase with works painted in the Texas summer heat. “I’ve found that my paintings reflect where I am; here in Dallas at the end of the pandemic and in scorching heat, the phrase fits my work” reflected Anderson. “Tempest in a teapot” as an historical phrase references political turmoil, specifically the Boston Tea Party. The phrase generally refers to any event that becomes overblown and explosive. The series of ten works reflects an historical phrase that began in the Roman times. Anderson recalled her creation of a similar earlier painting completed in a hallway, “I couldn’t back up to see the painting; I was limited to viewing it at a diagonal, and finally was able to see it from a distance in the installation”. Anderson feels similarly confined, working at the end of a pandemic where her work was completed in a small space. Her paintings were separated by canvas spacers and alternately stacked against the walls as they progressed.
Anderson, originally from Nebraska made Texas her home as a child, and as an adult traveled to artist in residencies in Europe for ten years following her MFA in Painting from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Anderson’s works were first shown here in Dallas at Mary Wright Gallery and then at the Albright Knox Gallery in Buffalo, NY. In 2014, she was invited for a solo exhibition at the 8th Biennale in Gyumri, Armenia. In 2022, she will participate in a 15-year retrospective with two fellow Dutch artists in The Netherlands. Jacob Hunwick, a fellow student is creating animations of her works, documenting the progression to the final paintings.
