Psychology Lecture Series

Title - Old Issues, New(er) Solutions: How Can Social Psychology Inform the Effort to Promote Healthcare Equity?

Speaker: Nao Hagiwara, PhD
University of Virginia

Over two decades ago, the landmark report Unequal Treatment highlighted the role of healthcare providers' biases in pervasive racial healthcare disparities. There has also been a surge in efforts by U.S. educational institutions and organizations involved in healthcare training to address these implicit biases in recent years. However, provider bias remains a significant public health issue. In this presentation, Dr. Hagiwara will review the key knowledge gaps in the current literature on provider bias that hinder progress toward achieving racial healthcare equity. She will then discuss the importance of drawing on social psychology research on intergroup bias as well as using the clinical and translational science framework to effectively address these knowledge gaps.
