The countries of Africa frequently experience political upheaval and violence – so much so that Violence Early-Warning Systems (ViEWS) at Uppsala University created a competition to predict state-based conflict and to improve outcomes for those whose lives are impacted. Dr. Vito D’Orazio, associate professor of political science, and his team used machine learning to win the competition and forecast violence six months in advance. Join us to learn about how the algorithm works and Dr. D’Orazio’s next steps.
