Submit your proposal for RAW 2023

Submission Deadline: January 22nd, 2023

The Arts, Humanities, & Technology Association of Graduate Students (AGS) of UTD is now inviting proposals for the fourteenth annual RAW conference. The conference is organized by and for graduate student scholars to engage in scholarly and creative conversations with peers across the various fields of the humanities. Our 2023 conference will be facilitated in a hybrid format: in-person presentations will be hosted in Richardson, Texas; remote presentations will be hosted online.

This year, in light of the situation in Iran, and how it is affecting the global presence of women in different societies, and the art they created as they negotiate their relationship with freedom, we invite scholarly papers and creative projects that address the part women play in bringing art into everyday life. How do women engage/disengage with the amount of freedom they have, and see themselves and the world through the limitations forced upon them? How do we look to the historical journey to freedom of women to understand the present and/or the future in which there will be no oppression for women? From the women who created Blues in America, singing their pain from racism, to contemporary Chinese women artists trying to make sense of their quickly changing society and how women fit into it, women have used art to describe or attempt to formulate their relationships to freedom. We hope the wide scope of our theme this year will allow the incorporation of submissions from across the humanities disciplines.

Presenters at the RAW 2023 conference will be eligible to submit their paper or creative work for the following awards:

  • 12th Annual Sherry Clarkson Prize for the best scholarly paper
  • RAW Committee Award for Outstanding Presentation

General Guidelines:

  • All submissions will require a title for the submission, brief biographical information, three to five keywords, and whether the presenter will be attending in person or virtually. All accepted presenters must register for the conference after notice of acceptance, which will be sent out a week after the deadline (online $35,  in-person $60).

Scholarly Papers:

  • Paper proposals require an abstract of 250-300 words that address the paper’s argument and scholarly significance to the chosen field: history, literature, philosophy, or visual and performing arts. Accepted scholarly papers are expected to fulfill a fifteen-minute presentation.
