The number of undergraduate research opportunities available < the number of students interested in developing meaningful relationships with faculty. In an effort to provide students with skill building opportunities, to generate more faculty touchpoints with students, and to give students a preview of graduate training, CTL is launching the Short-term Working Group (SWG) model.

SWGs aim to:

~Increase opportunities for meaningful short-term faculty-student relationships

~Positively affect student outcomes including ratings of academic self-efficacy, confidence about pursuing graduate training, and self-reports of belonging and mattering

~Close cultural capital gaps for first-generation students and members of traditionally underrepresented groups in higher education

How it works:

~Faculty commit to an initial workshop to develop an idea and receive mentorship training

~You will meet with a cohort of students 4 times, each meeting with a particular goal

~CTL can assist in matching you with interested students or you can draw from your classes

~Students and faculty complete pre / post assessments

~Participating faculty can opt to collaborate on a teaching-focused presentation / publication

~Projects are completed in Summer23, Fall23, or Spring 24 semesters

~Open to any UTD faculty member / instructor of record

In the April 7^th session, faculty will map out a project idea and potential goals for the 4 sessions.

Faculty are welcome to attend to learn more and decide later if you'd like to pursue your project.
