Wednesday, November 17, 12:00 PM  – 1:00 PM CST

WATCH LIVE from any browser on November 17 at 12PM:

Over the past two decades, the use of online social media systems have exploded.  We now have billions of users using Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and other social media systems (e.g., Tik-Tok). These systems have provided numerous opportunities from finding jobs, connecting with family and friends, getting useful information of the spread of infectious diseases like COVID-19 and helping law enforcement with finding criminals. In addition, the social media systems are being used by companies to market useful products that help towards healthy living to providing peace of mind by analyzing the sentiments of the users. While there are numerous benefits to using social media that also provide us with many opportunities, there are also many challenges. There is a dark side to social media from spreading misinformation that would result in terrorist activities to cyber bullying that has driven especially teenaged girls to depression and suicide. To discuss the opportunities and challenges with social media, we have convened a panel consisting of professors from multiple schools at UT Dallas that include computer scientists who conduct research in social media analytics and explore security and privacy issues as well as social scientists and psychologists who study the dark side of social media such as trolling and cyber bullying. Our goal is to raise awareness of the opportunities and challenges with social media and discuss different viewpoints to benefit society.

Our panelists and topics they'll discuss:

  • Dr. Bhavani Thuraisingham, Panel Chair, ECS
  • Dr. Latifur Khan, Social Media Analytics, ECS
  • Dr. Paul Fishwick, The Media of Social Media, ATEC
  • Dr. Anton Sobolev, SoCal Media Trolling and Cyber Bullying, EPPS
  • Dr. Murat Kantarcioglu, Social Media Security and Privacy, ECS
  • Kacey Sebeniecher, Social Media Impacts on Students, Student Wellness Center

Dr. Thuraisingham and additional panelists will join us post-event in an MS Teams Meeting for our audience members to ask further questions and engage with the panelists. Click here to join directly after the program:
