Free EventSpinning Stories to Gold is a photography exhibition which features the work of PhD candidate Anna Jaehnert. The artist introduces viewers to her visual interpretation of the Grimm Brothers’ iconic fairy tales: Rumpelstiltskin, Snow White, Little Red Cap, and The Frog King.
In addition, the artist introduces viewers to the female storytellers who supplied more than 75% of the stories that Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm published. Without the women's steady supply of stories, there would not have been a volume 1 and volume 2 of The Grimm Brothers' Fairy Tales, which were later translated into 160 languages and brought the two brothers worldwide fame and success .
The artist's inspiration for the aesthetics of her photographs can be traced back to German Expressionist films, which incorporate haunting elements such as shadows, mirrors, distortions, exaggerated acting, etc. For this project, Jaehnert carefully staged each scene outside and often took on the role of the main character.
About the Artist
Anna Jaehnert greatly enjoys staged narrative photography and community building. She has taught art and theater at North Shore Academy of the Arts, WI, and German courses at Concordia University of Wisconsin and at the University of Texas at Dallas.
