On 21st February at 5:30PM in CRA 12.120, Berwyn will give a talk: A Texan Lady, The Ugly Duchess and Art's Missing Persons: The Erasure of Disease and Disability from Western Culture.
Taking as its starting point the enigmatic 500-year-old painting recently on display at the Dallas Museum of Art, this lecture is part detective work, part discussion of the representation of illness and impairment in art. Does the woman in the Dallas portrait have a congenital disease? Is she related to the subject of a masterpiece in London's National Gallery? Do they both share a cousin in Vienna? More importantly, what do these paintings and others tell us about the erasure, concealment and suppression of the stories of people with disabilities and life changing conditions from our culture?
Discover some of these hidden histories in this fascinating talk.
