In advance of Friday, October 27's event From Pitch to Panda with PIXAR director & screenwriter Domee Shi, the Bass School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology will be screening the movie Turning Red on Thursday, October 26, in the ATC Lecture Hall at noon.

Domee Shi developed Turning Red based on her experiences growing up in Toronto. Shi served as the director and as a writer for Turning Red. Shi previously directed the short film Bao (2018).

About the movie:

In 2022, Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures collaborated to create Turning Red, an American animated fantasy comedy film. This production, directed by Domee Shi in her debut as a feature director, was produced by Lindsey Collins. The screenplay, crafted by Shi and Julia Cho, drew inspiration from a story written by Shi, Cho, and Sarah Streicher. Notably, Turning Red stands as Pixar's first feature film solely directed by a woman. The film boasts a talented cast, featuring voices such as Rosalie Chiang, Sandra Oh, Ava Morse, Hyein Park, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Orion Lee, Wai Ching Ho, Tristan Allerick Chen, and James Hong.

Set in the backdrop of Toronto, Ontario, in the year 2002, the story of Turning Red revolves around Meilin (Mei) Lee, a 13-year-old Chinese-Canadian student. Mei has a unique condition where she transforms into a massive red panda whenever she experiences strong emotions, a condition passed down through her family as a hereditary curse.

The movie earned a Best Animated Feature nomination at the 95th Academy Awards, alongside numerous other honors and accolades.
