Workshop Talk with Dr. Mark Rosen

Dr. Mark Rosen, Associate Professor at the University of Texas at Dallas presents

The Map from the Other Side of the Clouds

Clouds play a strange, paradoxical role in early modern cartography. They serve no geographical or significatory function, yet they appear in maps fairly regularly, obscuring landmarks or separating the realm of divinity from that of earthbound mortals. This talk addresses how the ephemeral and transitory nature of clouds undermine the totalizing claims of the scientific nature of cartography while also being regularly included in many of the period’s most notable maps.
