EODIAH Workshop Talk: Please join us on campus at UTD Thursday, March 30, 4:30 p.m., for a workshop talk with art historian Erika Doss.

“Looking at Gift Horses: Ivan Mestrovic, Hans Haacke, and Public Art in Chicago, 1928-2018,” focuses on two examples of public art gifted to the city of Chicago. Ivan Mestrovic’s 1928 statues The Bowman and The Spearman both depict naked Native American warriors on horseback, and Hans Haacke’s Gift Horse (2018), a temporary installation of an equestrian skeleton, wears a live stock ticker on its right foreleg, tied in a bow while continuously displaying market prices.

Exploring the origins, motivation, and reception of both projects, this talk looks at the intersections between art, money, politics, and public interests over time.
