Please join EODIAH at our Dallas Museum of Art Research Center for a Workshop Talk by Gretchen Meyers:

The Shield of Aeneas in Pietro da Cortona's Aeneid Fresco Cycle in Palazzo Pamphilj (Piazza Navona, Rome)

Between 1651-1654 Pietro da Cortona painted a fresco cycle of scenes from Vergil’s Aeneid on the galleria ceiling in the Palazzo Pamphili in Piazza Navona. Among the various scenes depicted, the shield of Aeneas occurs multiple times in the ceiling's imagery. Given the poetic significance of Aeneas' shield as a well-known example of ekphrasis in Vergil's text-a literary description of a work of visual art--da Cortona's multiple depictions of it invite questions about the diverse roles of artist and poet, as well as the interplay of text and image in this work.

Gretchen Meyers is Associate Professor and Chair of Classics and Director of the Office of Sponsored Research at Franklin and Marshall College.
